From 1906 to 1933, the Yaquina Bay Life-Saving Station was located at the Yaquina Bay Lighthouse. The lighthouse had been built in 1871, but was decommissioned in 1874. The Yaquina Bay life-savers gladly moved in, as the lighthouse's location was far superior to their life-saving station on South Beach. This use of a lighthouse as a life-saving station is the only known instance in the United States. (Courtesy of U.S. Coast Guard.)
